In March 2023, the most advanced hospital in Slovakia – the Novej Generácie Bratislava Bory Hospital – was inaugurated. The total capacity of this hospital is 405 beds, with more than 50 specialties and 6 main medical programs. A total of 14 operating theatres and 2 spare operating theatres were implemented here.
We took part in the construction of this hospital in the following 3 areas:
- The clean built-in of the operating theatres and their facilities,
- Interior doors without fire resistance,
- Locksmith structures
- Pass-through cabinets,
- Stainless steel structures.
From the preparation of project documentation, through delivery, installation, start-up and personnel training.
14 Advanced Operating Theatres in BLOCK Surgical® Design
The newly constructed hospital will have 14 high-end operating theatres and 2 spare operating theatres with the possibility of future rapid equipment retrofitting and start-up if necessary. The operating theatre includes, for example, a robotic and hybrid operating theatre, a future technology operating theatre, as well as general surgery or theatres for gynaecological or cardiac surgery. BLOCK Surgical® was selected as the construction system for the built-in operating theatres.
The following functional units were part of the "Clean Operating Theatre Build-ins":
- The clean built-in of the operating theatres and their facilities,
- Operating theatre video integration system,
- Stainless steel and metal dustproof furnishings for clean rooms.
Easy Integration of New Technologies and Equipment Is Possible Whenever Needed, Thanks to Simple Panel Disassembly
The BLOCK Surgical® structural system for built-in theatres features 4 horizontally placed panels on top of each other, where the fourth panel is placed above the suspended ceiling, making it possible to demount each of the built-in panels. The material solution for the operating theatres is based on a combination of AISI 304 brushed stainless steel and galvanised painted sheet metal in a RAL shade of the architect's choice.
Each operating theatre is shielded against X-rays. All of them have access to daylight and therefore the details of the design of the built-in facilities accommodate this as well. In the anteroom of most operating theatres there is a doctor's washroom, including stainless steel washing troughs built into the construction, as well as facilities for patient preparation. The backstage areas of specialised theatres also contain control rooms, preparation rooms or storage areas made of clean built-ins.
The System Design Allows for Direct Incorporation of Medical Technology, Equipment, Cabinets and Other Elements
As part of the built-ins, components such as touch-sensitive multifunction panels, automatically sliding and revolving doors, tinted pharma glazing between control rooms and theatres, light metal suspended ceilings, and digital clocks for each theatre, Do Not Enter signs operated from MLF panels, dustproof sewing cabinets, LED ceiling lights, clean extensions with HEPA filters, exhaust extensions and exhaust ducts with triple-layered HVAC grilles, were supplied and installed.
Glass Graphic Panels for a Pleasant Working Environment
Glass graphic panels are a significant element in making the working environment more pleasant. They are placed horizontally above all built-in cabinet units. The length of the graphic panels therefore ranges from 2 to 4.5 metres.
HALTON Filtration Systems Replace Standard Laminar Fields
By using HALTON‘s operating theatre filtration systems to replace standard operating theatre laminar fields, an ISO 5 cleanliness class according to ISO 14 644-1 is guaranteed for the entire operating theatre area. The air is then exhausted via BLOCK® exhaust grilles and ducts.
Furnishings in Dustproof Design
Each operating theatre contains a set of built-in high cabinets made of galvanized fully painted sheet metal in RAL shade according to the architectural design of the theatre. The furniture is made in a dustproof design with full-circuit sealing of all doors. Each assembly and its layout or equipment was designed according to the needs and orientation of the operating theatre. The units include, but are not limited to, convertible shelves, pull-out shelves for sterilization screens, ISO baskets and modules, catheter pull-outs, etc.
Advanced Video Integration System in 4K Display
All operating theatres include a high-end video integration system in 4K display. The main functionalities of the video management system include:
- access to PACS, NIS, RIS
- video conferencing features (including headsets with microphones for operators)
- operation live-streaming and recording
- hybrid socket function with the possibility of connecting any video signal
- handling up to 200 signals in all operating theatres
Access to individual functions is provided via built-in All-in-One devices, combination consoles or suspended medical monitors on tripods or operating theatre lamp stands.
The total era of construction was 1,050 m2, all of which was in a clean room design:
- ISO Cleanliness Class 5: 745 m2
- ISO Cleanliness Class 7: 185 m2
- ISO Cleanliness Class 8: 120 m2
The BLOCK Group companies participating in the project implementation were:
- BLOCK CRS a.s. (complex delivery)
- BLOCK a.s. (design)
- BLOCK Technology a.s. (pass-through cabinets supply)
- FOR Clean, a.s. (cleanroom built-in components supply, including more than 120 metal cleanroom doors throughout the entire hospital)
